The Royal Road Trip
Rajasthan is India's most photogenic state, and the best way to experience it is behind the wheel. The distances between cities are manageable, the highways are decent, and every few hours the landscape changes dramatically — from Aravalli hills to Thar Desert to emerald lakes.
Day 1-2: Jaipur (The Pink City)
Start in Jaipur. Amber Fort in the morning (go early, by 8 AM, to beat the heat and crowds). Hawa Mahal and City Palace in the afternoon. Nahargarh Fort at sunset for panoramic views. Day 2: Albert Hall Museum and a walk through the old city bazaars — Johari Bazaar for jewellery, Bapu Bazaar for textiles. Don't miss a thali at LMB or Rawat Mishthan Bhandar.
Day 3-4: Pushkar & Ajmer
Drive to Pushkar (3 hours). The Brahma Temple, one of the few in the world, sits beside the sacred Pushkar Lake. Walk the ghats at sunrise. The town has an unexpectedly good cafe culture — Israeli, Italian, and Indian food. Day 4: Visit Ajmer's Dargah Sharif, then drive to Jodhpur.
Day 5-6: Jodhpur (The Blue City)
Mehrangarh Fort is, without exaggeration, one of the most impressive forts in the world. Spend half a day here. The blue-painted houses of the old city look best from the fort ramparts. Zip-lining across the fort walls is surprisingly thrilling. Day 6: Mandore Gardens, Umaid Bhawan Palace museum, and shopping at the Sardar Market clock tower.
Day 7: Jaisalmer (The Golden City)
The 5-hour drive from Jodhpur takes you into the Thar Desert. Jaisalmer Fort is unique — people still live inside it. Wander the narrow lanes, visit the havelis (Patwon Ki Haveli and Salim Singh Ki Haveli), and eat dal baati churma at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the fort.
Day 8: Desert Experience
Book a desert camp at Sam Sand Dunes (30 km from Jaisalmer). Camel ride at sunset, dinner under the stars, and folk music around a bonfire. Avoid the touristy camps right at Sam — drive 2-3 km further for quieter, more authentic experiences. Budget about ₹3,000-5,000 per person for overnight camping.
Day 9-10: Udaipur (The City of Lakes)
Drive to Udaipur (approximately 9 hours, or break the journey at Mount Abu). City Palace is enormous — budget 3 hours. Take a boat ride on Lake Pichola at sunset. Walk around Jagdish Temple and the narrow streets of the old city. Day 10: Saheliyon Ki Bari gardens, Vintage Car Museum, and farewell dinner at Ambrai overlooking the lake.
