When people think of Indian travel, they picture Rajasthan's forts, Kerala's backwaters, or Goa's beaches. Rarely does the Northeast come up — and that's precisely what makes it so special. Eight states, each culturally distinct, with landscapes that range from tropical rainforests to snow-capped peaks.

Why Now?

Infrastructure has improved dramatically. Direct flights connect Guwahati, Imphal, and Dibrugarh to major cities. Inner Line Permits for Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Mizoram are now available online. And unlike most popular destinations, the Northeast hasn't been overcommercialized yet.

Must-Visit Highlights

Kaziranga National Park, Assam — Home to two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinoceros. Elephant safaris at dawn through misty grasslands are unforgettable. Best between November and April.

Living Root Bridges, Meghalaya — The Khasi people have trained tree roots to grow into natural bridges over centuries. The double-decker bridge at Nongriat village requires a 3,500-step descent (and ascent). Worth every step.

Loktak Lake, Manipur — The world's only floating lake, with circular floating islands (phumdis) that look like giant green lily pads. Keibul Lamjao National Park, on the lake, is the world's only floating national park.

Tawang Monastery, Arunachal Pradesh — The second-largest Buddhist monastery in the world after Lhasa. At 3,048 metres, it commands views that seem to stretch to the end of the earth.

Dzukou Valley, Nagaland-Manipur Border — A valley of wildflowers at 2,438 metres, often compared to the Valley of Flowers. The campsite under the stars here is one of the best trekking experiences in India.

The Food

Northeast cuisine is vastly different from what most Indians know. Smoked pork with bamboo shoot in Nagaland, momos and thukpa in Arunachal Pradesh, fish tenga (sour fish curry) in Assam, and Manipuri eromba (mashed vegetables with fermented fish). If you're vegetarian, you'll manage but with less variety — this region loves its meat.

• Best season: October to April (monsoon from May to September brings heavy rain and landslides)
• Budget: ₹2,000-4,000 per day including mid-range accommodation, food, and local transport

The Northeast rewards travellers who come with curiosity, patience, and open minds. It's not the easiest region to travel in, but it's among the most rewarding.
