10 Underrated Hill Stations in India That Deserve Your Attention

Every summer, the same hill stations get overrun with tourists. Traffic jams on mountain roads, fully booked hotels, and crowds that defeat the purpose of escaping the city. But India has hundreds of hill stations, and some of the most beautiful ones remain blissfully under the radar.

1. Chopta, Uttarakhand

Called the "Mini Switzerland of India" (and actually deserving of the title), Chopta sits at 2,680 metres surrounded by dense forests of pine, deodar, and rhododendron. The trek to Tungnath temple — the highest Shiva temple in the world — starts here and takes about 3.5 hours. Best visited between March and June or September and November.

2. Ziro Valley, Arunachal Pradesh

A UNESCO World Heritage tentative site, Ziro is home to the Apatani tribe and their unique rice-fish farming system. The valley is flat, green, and surrounded by pine-clad hills. The Ziro Music Festival in September is one of India's best outdoor music events.

3. Chikmagalur, Karnataka

Coffee plantations stretching across misty hills, winding roads through Western Ghats forests, and homestays that serve filter coffee so good it'll ruin you for instant forever. Mullayanagiri peak at 1,930 metres is Karnataka's highest point.

4. Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

Home to the largest Buddhist monastery in India, Tawang sits at 3,048 metres with views that make you forget to breathe. The drive from Guwahati takes about 12 hours through some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Northeast.

5. Sandakphu, West Bengal

The only place in India where you can see four of the five highest peaks in the world — Everest, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu — from a single vantage point. The trek from Manebhanjan takes 3-4 days.

6. Araku Valley, Andhra Pradesh

Tribal villages, coffee estates, and the spectacular Borra Caves. The train journey from Visakhapatnam to Araku through 58 tunnels and 84 bridges is one of India's most scenic rail routes.

7. Vagamon, Kerala

Rolling meadows, pine forests, and mist-covered peaks without the crowds of Munnar. Paragliding here is surprisingly affordable at around ₹2,500 per flight.

8. Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh

A cold desert mountain valley with ancient monasteries, crystal-clear skies, and a landscape that looks like another planet. Visit between June and September when the roads are open.

• Carry cash — ATMs and card machines are unreliable in smaller towns
• Respect local customs — especially in tribal areas of the Northeast
